Choosing the right networking event

There are no hard and fast rules to choosing the right networking event for your and your business but there are however, some things that you might want to consider before committing to attend.

Is the event relevant to your business area?  You can find this out easily enough by researching the company holding the event.  If you look online I am certain that there will be reviews from candidates from past events that will help you to decide whether this is the right event for you.

Networking events can come in all guises, from an away day with your peers to an evening out bowling.  Do you want to attend a formal presentation from an expert but meet other contacts or do you want to participate in a more informal outing.

How much expenditure are you prepared to commit? An away day can be costly as you have travel expenses and overnight stays in hotels to consider as well as the events costs.  This is why it is so important to check that this event is going to be right for your business.

If you work in a large organisation you could be invited to events arranged by your suppliers.  This is a great way to network with your opposite number in a different organisation in a sociable environment.

Event networking is crucial at the onset of a business venture to help to get your company name out there.  Look online to see what events are going on in your local area.  If you are just starting up you may not want to travel too far afield so look online to see what is going on in your local area.  There will be a publication relating to your business area that will also give you ideas of where you can network and meet those valuable contacts.  If you are a retailer there will probably be a large annual trade event at a stadium not to far from your location.  You can chat to the stallholders and build up your network of contacts.

So remember, check that the event is relevant, decide how much money you want to spend on an event and how far away from your home office you want to travel, research the company holding the event and see what past candidates thought of the event you are thinking about attending.
