Boosting Morale – Team Building and Corpporate Events

Mentoring Master
Sometimes in life it is possible to become an expert in a particular area without even realising it. All those teenage geeks gaming away in their bedrooms become amazingly good at computer programming, and all those obsessive bloggers get incredibly skilled at social networking. These are skills which are actually marketable if presented in the right way, and if you are a secret expert perhaps you could become a mentoring master. [Read More...]

Running a successful business
Many people think about starting their own business and working from home, however most are quite understandably concerned about saying goodbye to their monthly pay slips from payroll services.
There are approximately 300,000 new companies started each year joining the 2 million limited companies currently listed in the UK. As people face the prospect of no pay rises and little prospects during these difficult financial times; more and more of us are thinking about those little ideas which would make us a million. Television programmes like ‘Dragons Den’ and ‘The next big thing’ only add fuel to our fire. [Read More...]

Who Needs Life Insurance?
Life insurance always sounds like a sensible idea in principle, but do you really need it. There are some circumstances when it’s definitely a good idea.
Whatever way you look at it, life insurance is a bit of a gamble. If you die within the policy term, you give your dependants a financial security that they may not otherwise have. On the other hand, if you outlive the term, then your money that you’ve paid into the policy is not refundable.
Mortgages
It’s often sensible to have a life insurance policy in place if you have a mortgage, particularly if you have a spouse or dependants who may not be able to carry on the mortgage payments in the case of your death. However, if you are single, without dependants, then no one else will be responsible for paying the amount outstanding on the mortgage. The lender will sell your house to get their investment back.
All lenders do encourage every mortgage applicant to take out life insurance. Often they will have a policy available themselves – but it’s worth getting a couple of comparison quotes, as theirs may not be the cheapest. The main reason you are encouraged to do this is that if you die without paying the full amount back, your dependants will be liable for the debt.
Family
If your children or partner is dependent on your income, then having a life insurance policy is a sensible thing to do. Suncorp life insurance will pay a lump sum if a life insurance policy holder dies, so that their family can have financial security. It is worth thinking about a term life insurance policy that will cover the length of your mortgage and your children’s education, including university years.
The best thing to do before choosing a life insurance policy – or dismissing the idea – is to talk to a financial adviser and get some advice. Companies like Suncorp offer financial advice to people considering taking out insurance policies. You can also contact an independent financial adviser for their input.
What about if you’re self-employed?
If you want to get life insurance, the process should be no different if you are self-employed. Sometimes your actual occupation can affect life insurance premiums but only if you happen to have a high risk job like deep sea diver or light aircraft pilot.
Improving Business
How do you choose a Forex broker?
If you run a small business involved in import or export in any way – and you’ve decided to hedge your foreign currency exchange risk to iron out future fluctuations – how did you choose your broker?
Here are a few considerations to bear in mind:
Reputation is everything. Warren Buffett once said: “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.”
Forex trading has no single governing body, so many brokers are unregulated. So try and find a regulated broker and try and find out everything you can about the company; how long has it been around and what do other people say about it? Be careful, though, when searching online for this information as many posters have an “agenda” and the information may not be objective. Reputation really is everything here.
Depending on which currencies you hope to trade, you should think about which currency pairs a broker has to offer. You should also think about the spread sizes quoted for the various types of common currency pairings – and, of course, the leverage offered. This lets you know what value of currency exposure you can gain for the amount you are willing to put down. The level of importance you place on the leverage offered will depend on the size of exposure you’re really looking for, which in turn depends on the size of the business you’re looking to hedge.
The broker should also explain the difference to you between fixed and variable spreads. This can make a real difference to your bottom line. Not all brokers quote rates in the same way. If your broker has a dealing desk, then the broker creates the pricing and executes your orders – and the spread is fixed, so those spreads are usually higher than the average variable spreads. Where there is no dealing desk, then multiple banks usually stream competitive prices through your broker, so your orders are executed by the banks.
If this is all new to you and a broker won’t take the time to explain the complications and possibilities as well as the downside risks – then this should be a big red flag.
